Paul Auster Explains Why Philip Roth Is Wrong « biblioklept

I tripped over Paul Auster’s defence of story and find his argument both convincing and compelling.

  1. I love “Phil” and just read “The Plot Against America,” which was outstanding and chilling; though I had a sense it was deliberately throttled back from the far reaches of the imagination that it could have explored, this technique made the story all the more real and believable. It did not strain credulity.

However, this “death of the novel” stuff is, as Paul Auster points out, old news that was never right before, and isn’t correct now, either. Probably, Phil’s reasoning makes for an interesting read. However, as for the conclusion he drew, I agree: it just ain’t so.

Best wishes and thanks for the visit on BlogCatalog. Jim
